Pros

The EXPS3 is an upgrade to the XPS3 which is also an upgrade to the XPS2. The EXPS3 sight has a few notable features to offer which make it a useful purchase and suitable for many applications.

4 dot 1 MOA Reticle With Brightness Setting and NV Compatibility

The EOTech holo sights come with a 68 MOA ring reticle which encapsulates a 1 MOA dot. The number of dots inside the ring differs depending upon the model of the sight in question. The EXPS3 offers the 1 and 2 dot variants along with a 4 dot variant.

These four 1 MOA dots are calibrated for 50/200, 400, 500, and 600 yards of distance respectively with a .223 cal 62 gr bullet. With the base of the ring calibrated for 7 yards.

The brightness of this reticle can be adjusted among 20 settings with a scroll feature for easy estimation. The sight is also compatible with Gen 1-3+ night vision devices and offers 10 adjustment settings for the NV mode.

Ergonomic and User-Friendly Design

The EXPS3 has all the push button controls mounted on the side of the lens housing. Rather than the common rear position. This makes adjustments easy for the user, especially when using the sight in conjunction with a magnifier.

Additionally, the sight has an auto-shutoff mode that switches off the reticle after 8 hours of operation (programmable to 4 hours). The sight also has a low battery indicator feature which makes the reticle blink five times upon power up to signify that less than 5 hours of battery life is remaining.

Easy to Mount and Iron Sight Compatible

The sight comes with an in-built mount for easy attachment to any Picatinny or Weaver rail. The compact size doesnโ€™t take up much space. Plus, the sight also works as a co-witness sight due to its raised base.

Cons

After all the good it has to offer. Letโ€™s take a look at some drawbacks of the EXPS3 sight.

Controls Are Not Ambidextrous

The side-mounted controls on the EXPS3 are both a pro and a con. While these side-mounted buttons offer easy unhindered access, they are not ambidextrous. The push buttons are located on the left side which is a great position for a right-handed shooter. However, a left-handed shooter will have to break his view of the target to access the buttons.

Had it been a dial knob, things wouldโ€™ve been a bit simpler. But since these are push buttons, it is a bit difficult to use for left-handed shooters.

Low Battery Life Than Counterparts

The EOTech EXPS3 is a holographic sight and uses a complex illumination mechanism to reticle projection. While it makes the sight parallax free and quick to acquire targets. It significantly reduces battery life, especially when compared with other red dots on the market. The average battery life of this sight is 500-600 hours on brightness setting 12.

While the battery life will not be a real pain for occasional users. Dedicated users will have to replace the battery often.

Best Uses for the EOTech EXPS3

The first and best feature related to the usability of this sight is its simplicity. The sight doesnโ€™t have any complex features to handle and is very easy to use.

The compact size of the sight takes very little rail space and allows you to add other accessories. For example, adding a G33 or G43 magnifier will greatly enhance the function of this sight if youโ€™re using the 4 red dots version. Allowing you to shoot accurately up to a distance of 600 yards.

With that said, this sight can be used for close quarter applications accurately for distances as low as 7 yards, and for medium-range applications for distances as far as 600 yards. Which makes it an ideal candidate for tactical operations. Where the distance of shooting is practically unknown.

Other than that, this sight is a great optic for hunting. Both calm and extremely wary critters. Since you can get the range and also track targets easily, thanks to the parallax free reticle.

The next best use for this optic is competitions. 2-gun or 3-gun competitions are best suited for this sight due to its fast acquisition and accurate ring reticle.

Is the EOTech EXPS3 Compatible With Any Rifle?

The EXPS3 sight has been rigorously tested to withstand unforgiving recoil. The compact size, 4 dot reticle, and unlimited eye relief allow it to be mounted on a variety of rifles, carbines, and SBRโ€™s. The sight can even be mounted on shotguns shooting pellet shells or slugs.

The design, size, and weight of the sight make it open to experimentation.

What Do I Need to Know About Mounting the EOTech EXPS3?

As already mentioned, the EXPS3 is very compact size. In fact, the XPS series is the most compact line of sights EOTech has to offer. It only takes 2-ยพ inches of rail space on a 1-inch Picatinny or weaver rail. Leaving ample rail space for other optical accessories like magnifiers or BUIS.

The sight has an in-built quick detach mount that has no protruding levers on the sides. The QD mechanism fits flush under the base and eliminates the chances of snagging.

The base is 7mm raised for โ…“ co-witness of iron sights. So you need not purchase any riser or mount separately.

What Makes the EOTech EXPS3 Stand Out From the Competition?

The unique 4 dot reticle is something that differentiates the EXPS3 sight from other optics in its category. The reticle increases the range of the sight to 600 yards without compromising an inch on accuracy.

Additionally, the compact design, raised QD base and the proven reliability of an EOTech optic are the USPs of this sight. Plus the sight has absolutely negligent negative feedback from the buyers.

The EXPS3 costs two to three times more than other sights on the market and has a lesser battery life. But the aforementioned factors make it a stout and invincible competitor.

Comparison Overview

After discussing why the EXPS3 stands out from the competition. Letโ€™s compare it closely to some renowned and comparable red dot sights on the civilian market to give you a better idea.

EOTech EXPS2 vs EXPS3

The EXPS3 can be seen as an upgraded version of the EXPS2. The S3 offers night vision compatibility whereas the S2 does not. Additionally, the EXPS3 is submersible in up to 33 feet of water whereas the EXPS3 is submersible only up to 10 feet. The S2 also doesnโ€™t offer a 4 dot MOA reticle.

EOTech Xps3 vs EXPS3

The EXPS3 is an upgrade to the XPS3. The EXPS3 sight has a higher base, side-mounted controls, quick detach mount, and offers a 4 dot reticle. The XPS3 however, is more lightweight than the EXPS3 and has rear-mounted controls.

EOTech EXPS3 vs Aimpoint T2

The EOTech is a holographic weapon sight whereas the Aimpoint T2 is a reflex collimator sight which is less complex. The T2 is the clear winner in battery life (50,000 hours) compared to the EXPS3 (600 hours). The EOTech however comes with a QD mount, offers real parallax-free viewing, and has no forward light signature.

EOTech EXPS3 vs Aimpoint T1

The T2 is a smaller, more lightweight optic with long battery life (5 years) and better water submersibility (80 feet) compared to the EXPS3. However, the latter has more brightness settings for normal and NV use, and a finer reticle with range enhancement capabilities.

Conclusion

The EXPS3 is a compact and durable holographic sight which is the latest addition to the XPS line of sights from EOTech. The sight offers sight mounted controls, NV compatibility, and a 7mm risen flush QD mount base. It is best suited for tactical use, home defense, close to medium range shooting, and 2 or 3 gun competitions.
